In the movie "The Bourne Ultimatum" The heroe uses a book as a very effective weapon in one of the more intense fight scenes. In the special features section of the DVD they discuss this scene in detail including the use of the book. Many self defense manuals suggested using a rolled up newspaper or magazine as a weapon and Jason Bourne uses this strategy in the second move of the Triology "The Bourne Supremecy". Here is a link to the fight scene with the book, almost all the trailers and ads for the movie include this scene. Here is a link to one of them he moves fast so don't blink. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z91JXUBBylw

This reminds me of a Minneapolis politician's remarks on library and police funding. "Samuels, referring to his library vote, said, “When you are a person on the other end of a gun . . . the only use for a book is to throw it at them or block a bullet with it.”" http://is.gd/N9cq
