Hi, I am writing a post today and want to have a few real librarians come on over and comment on a question I have. If you can, please come over sometime after 12 noon today (Friday, Dec. 28) EST. I'm in Boston, Mass., US.

The older I get, and the more experience I have in libraries, the more I think that everything--work [in libraries and everwhere else], books, shopping, the Internet, getting the refrigerator fixed--is just the scaffolding on which to hang the important stuff of connections with other people. One reason I like reading both your blogs is the way you write about that. It's not frippery at all.

I hope the new year is happier for you than the end of this old one.

Well, damn on all the bad news, and good for you to say thank you even as you're dealing with things not to be thankful for. I was thinking about you today as I was writing a post about "how to be famous" and I was thinking, I don't even know why I'm bothering. You wrote the book on being a graceful public presence.

The things you talk about aren't frippery. 18 months into our move to Florida I'm still adjusting, but the loose ties I have around the world make the move survivable.
