[...] I’m particularly looking forward to Marshall Keys‘ Step Up to the Future, especially after reading about his presentation at 2006 Off Campus Library Services Conference. I’m also interested in Linda Braun (ALA blogger for YALSA, among other things)’s Newer and Newest: New Technologies and Their Impact on Teen Literacy. Because, of course, today’s teens are tomorrow’s freshman, and it would be so nice for an academic library to exceed their needs and expectations - instead of barely meeting them. And, of course, there’s Jessamyn, always with new wonderful things to say. God love her. [...]

Well, Jessamyn, I'm glad you have the patience to explain what you do to librarians, because for the life of me, I can't understand why people who are paid to provide services to *everybody* who walks in their library door can't do this stuff. I'm an unemployed librarian, 15 years out of library school and no libraries will touch me. So I've said, fuck them, I'll run my own library. I basically run a new infoshop and library in a poor neighborhood here in Kansas City. Our rent is $100 a month, which is pretty good if you can put up with the leaky roof and the mildew and mold in the building. Last night we had to kick out a homeless guy who took a nap during our movie showing. Tonight I got a list of books about Rastafarianism from a local guy and another retired vet asked me about finding the music for a John Philips Sousa march.

I don't get paid for any of this, but I have plenty of time to listen to these working class poor people.

So I don't understand why highly paid, comfortable librarians don't get the stuff you are talking about.
