As a career bookseller, I was so happy to see the ALA here in New Orleans. Our city needs so very much to get back together as an operating entity. (our libraries need some help, but you folks are already helping with that.)

May all of you be Blessed, and please come back next year.

[...] New Orleans has had its first major convention since Katrina, the American Library Association, and the reviews are coming in. Librarians are, without exception, a literate bunch and what they have to say about their visit to our city is very interesting. This website is a good repository of links to reviews written by the convention attendees. All praise the spirit and determination of the New Orleanians they talked too, but all expressed utter shock that this ongoing situation exists “in the United States.” I’m impressed that so many of the library association people made the effort to see the Ninth Ward and Lakeview for themselves. All of the people writing about it say that you can’t really understand until you see it with your own eyes, and they are exactly right. The people in our hospitality industry did a great job, as usual, so wouldn’t it be nice if the government helped them out by providing housing for people to fill all those service jobs that make everyone’s lives easier and our tourism industry possible?
